Sometimes the best business lessons happen when you step outside the classroom!
On Thursday, Gateway CEO spent some time with Justin McLaughlin, owner of Mac’s Family Fun Time and The Lory Theater in downtown Highland, learning what goes on behind the scenes of a family entertainment business.
Mac’s is a Family Entertainment Center—or FEC—and there is definitely something for everyone. 🎮⛳️🍦
Kids can play in the arcade, climb, enjoy the outdoor mini golf course, earn tickets and trade their game cards for prizes. And for families, birthday parties have become a big part of the business—and a big part of their marketing strategy.
Justin shared that some of their best advertising doesn't cost them anything: word of mouth. Happy families tell other families about their experience.
He also gave our students three simple keys to success:
1. Accounting — Keep track of the money.
2. Enthusiasm — You have to bring the energy.
3. Work culture — “You recruit who you are.”
Justin also has plans to keep growing, with the hope of eventually adding a go-kart track outside.
There was a lot for our students to take away from this visit, but maybe the biggest lesson was that successful businesses don't just happen. They require knowing your numbers, creating an experience people want to come back to, building a great team—and always looking for the next opportunity.
Thank you, Justin, for opening your doors and sharing your story with Gateway CEO!
And if you haven't been to Mac's Family Fun Time in Highland, this might be your sign to plan a family fun day. Check them out here! https://macsfamilyfun.com/mini-golf/
