☀️ There are SO many factors that impact a business—and sometimes, the smallest opportunities lead to the biggest ones!
On Thursday, our Gateway CEO students had the opportunity to welcome Bob Eaton with Day & Night Solar, who shared his entrepreneurial journey and some incredible real-world business lessons. Sometimes an opportunity comes along early in life, and we have no idea how it may come full circle years later.
For Bob, it started with a college internship. Years later, when he was asked to take on a solar-related project at work, that early experience became incredibly valuable. One opportunity led to another, relationships developed, and eventually Day & Night Solar was born!
Today, Day & Night Solar works on commercial solar projects from coast to coast, helping businesses explore creative energy solutions that meet their specific needs while reducing energy expenses.
And as Bob shared, there is a LOT more to running a solar company than simply installing solar panels! From working with local IBEW labor to navigating government tax incentives, understanding changing regulations, managing vendors and developing solutions based on geography and customer needs, every project brings its own challenges and opportunities. Bob shared some great takeaways with our students:
☀️ Find a need and build a solution. Every successful business begins with understanding what customers need and how your product or service can meet that need.
☀️ Know your business model. Bob described Day & Night Solar as a "Parts and Smarts" company—purchasing directly from manufacturers and bringing the products, expertise and solutions together for their customers.
☀️ Cash flow matters! Positive cash flow is essential to building a sustainable business. Understanding your numbers and what sets you apart from the competition is critical.
☀️ Relationships matter! Strategic vendor relationships help Day & Night Solar coordinate projects across the country. The right connections can make an incredible difference in what your business can accomplish.
☀️ Show your customer the VALUE. When presenting a solar project, helping a business understand its return on investment (ROI) is just as important as explaining the product itself.
☀️ Get CREATIVE! Whether designing a solar canopy or adapting a project to a particular location, successful businesses don't always offer the same solution to every customer.
☀️ Pay attention to what's happening around you. Changes in government policies, tax incentives and the political climate can dramatically impact an industry. Business owners have to stay informed and be ready to adapt.
What made this conversation especially valuable was how Bob connected his experiences to what our students will be doing in just a few months. During second semester, each student will develop and launch an individual business. They'll need to identify a need, understand their customers, develop a product or service, determine pricing, build relationships and figure out how to make their business profitable.
These aren't just concepts in a textbook. They're decisions real business owners make every single day! And that's what makes Gateway CEO such a unique learning experience. Bob, THANK YOU for your continued investment in Gateway CEO! ❤️
Your support over the years as an Investor, Mentor and Guest Speaker has made a lasting difference. We've watched your mentorship lead to internships, new opportunities and thriving businesses for students who have come through our program.
That's the power of investing in young people. Sometimes the impact is immediate. Other times, just like that college internship, the seeds planted today become opportunities years down the road.
You never know which conversation, connection or experience will change the direction of someone's future!
