One of the greatest gifts of the Gateway CEO program is allowing students to discover the innerworkings of both businesses and not-for-profits. With special thanks to Jessica Duft, Director of Education and Health Management of Anderson Hospital coordinated a morning of presentations from the Senior Leaders that ensure the hospital and patient experience is a positive one. Here are some of the highlights:
Lisa Spencer - President - Began career 27 years ago in nursing. Encouraged students to always take opportunities out of their comfort zone. As a leader, always listen first and then develop a strategy. Find a mentor that can help you grow.
Michelle Ward - Chief of Quality and Risk - Primary focus is patient care and what processes can be improved. To progress in leadership, must be listening and paying attention to others. What does leadership want and how can I act on it?
Mike Ward - Chief of Information Technology - This position is not just about computers, it's about software and date being correct. Can be a matter of life and death if information is missing. Looking for passion and good analytical skills. Wants staff that can think outside the box to find solutions.
Natalie Head - Public Relations Director - The face of communication for the hospital from print, online platforms, websites, logos, branding, etc. Working within the non-profit world, they will wear so many hats. She encouraged students to take advantage of every internship available.
Kara Reller - Human Resources Manager - Loves her role in ensuring employment opportunities with excellent benefits. Passionate about networking to open doors. Get on LinkedIn to connect with business/community leaders.
And finally Jessica wrapped up the morning sharing her journey from nurse into wellness through many community engagement opportunities and education for patients. She was an excellent source also regarding applying for scholarships, pursuing job shadows and getting plenty of volunteer hours.
It was a wonderful morning to learn that the hospital environment is well beyond the doctors and nurses. These individuals do make an impact everyday and their staff supporting them is just as important. We appreciate you!
